Project description:
The initial brief was to remodel the existing bungalow to improve the layout and access for the client who had a visual impairment. They wanted to create a home they could use and that gave them a relaxing environment to live in. They also wanted to make the property more energy efficient and utilise renewable technologies to provide them with energy security
During the process of designing the layout, we completely remodelled the existing building to widen corridors and provide an open plan living space where the clients could relax, while also having a snug to have a quiet escape.
We wanted to create a seamless connection with the garden and remove all potential trip hazards so created level access thresholds throughout. Light was important however had to be managed to control both overheating and to reduce glare, the roof lights in the living space have covers to the south bringing in light to the middle of the space but sheltering the glare and heat.
The modernisation included insulating the existing floor and installing underfloor heating, external insulation with render finish, high quality triple glazing, loft insulation, solar panels, battery and air sourced heat pump. The result of this removed the need for gas to the property.
In 2023 the property exported more electricity to the grid than it used.
Throughout the design and construction process, Daniel kept in regular contact with the client to provide support and guided them through some difficult decisions to develop their ideas and deliver the house.
